NON UCCIDERE
Rome, Italy
2023
The MAXXI – National Museum of 21st Century Arts marked the 75th anniversary of the Italian Constitution with a major exhibition project commissioned to two leading figures of contemporary culture: artist Emilio Isgrò and architect Mario Botta.
Isgrò’s work takes the form of a monumental bas-relief in Sinai stone, composed of eleven elements, while the architectural structure, designed by Mario Botta, was produced by Riva1920 in reclaimed Lebanese cedar and installed in the museum’s large outdoor piazza.
Emilio Isgrò’s work reflects on the principles of social coexistence that underpin all constitutional charters. The artist reinterprets the biblical tablets of the Ten Commandments—understood as the moral foundation of civil society—intervening on the inscriptions through erasure, the defining feature of his artistic research for nearly sixty years, leaving visible a single universal message: NON UCCIDERE ("Do Not Kill").
The installation was subsequently presented as a travelling exhibition: in 2024 in L’Aquila, in the courtyard of Palazzo Margherita, and in 2025 in Scicli, at the MACC Museum.
