A single and unswerving principle has always guided our work: to produce furniture conceived by great designers, using only solid wood from sustainable forests and natural finishes, to create a natural home where you can smell the scents of wood, oils and wax. And to offer you a product made completely in Italy.
Our furniture is made exclusively using wood from sustainably managed forests, in a spirit of respect for nature and in line with both local and international laws and organizations.
A tree may be compared to a living being: it is born, breathes, grows, reproduces itself
and finally dies. Its entire lifecycle takes place always in the same environment, which
determines how long and how well it lives. Wood is a renewable but not an infinite
resource: only responsible use and a viable policy of integration into our woodland
heritage is capable of guaranteeing the correct balance in our ecosystem in the future.
Following our passion for wood and the care we show to our environment, for some years now Riva 1920 has been reusing material and recycling wood, like the scented cedar wood from Lebanon, kauri wood from New Zealand and briccola from Venice Lagoon.
Riva 1920 only chooses suppliers of solid wood of reforastation, in order to protect the environment. Whenever they cut a tree, they plant seven new ones.
Multiplex and solid wood are the two basic materials used by RIVA 1920.
Multiplex panels are made by using Italian poplar wood which has grown in the regions of Piedmont and lower Lombardy from time immemorial. Poplar plantations are quick-growing (they have an approximately 7-10 year lifecycle) and the provided timber is an easily renewable raw material, supplied by generations of planters.
Base in natural iron or lacquered
Some products of the RIVA 1920 Collection feature bases made of natural plate or tubular iron. The base is first cleaned with specific neutral detergents and then finished with oil. Any marks, little scratches or discolorations on the surface of the iron legs are typical features of any blast-furnace-forged iron products not coated with paint. Similarly, any signs of oxidation on the legs are typical features of natural iron. In order to avoid the anaesthetic effects of oxidation, we advice to periodically clean the iron legs with the oil provided in the Maintenance Kit.
Iron bases coated with opaque RAL paints can be purchased upon request (extra charge applied).
In several Riva 1920’s cabinets you can find lacquered and tempered glasses, which, even if broken, do not affect human health in any way.

Fabric and Leather covers
- NUVOLA is a full-grain leather characterized by high quality and aesthetics. Nuvola is a type of leather that respects health and the environment: all the products used throughout the tanning and finishing processes meet European regulations.
- OLIMPIA is a cuoietto leather characterized by high quality and aesthetics. This type of leather is obtained from the back of the calf, it is chrome tanned and finished with water polyurethane resins. Wet rub resistance: 500/700 strokes. Dry rub resistance: 1000 strokes.
The leather is averagely 2mm thick.
The “OLIMPIA” leather respects health and the environment: all the products used throughout the tanning and finishing processes meet European regulations.
- ELLADE is a 100% cotton fabric, used for removable upholstery. It can be washed at 30 degrees with water or dry cleaned with
- HOUSTON leathers have European origins and are obtained from bulls or bullocks. Only from these animals it is possible to obtain a thickness of the leather down to 3 mm. All the processing phases necessary to obtain such leathers take place in tanneries in Arzignano in respect of all European laws. The tanning process makes use of trivalent chromium salts that are essential raw materials for the
growth of vegetation. No hexavalent chromium or pentachlorophenol are used given their harmful and cancerous properties. Upon request we can provide detailed leather specifications with results of tear strength, rip, rubbing, light and fire resistance.
technologically highly advanced machinery
A lot of Riva 1920’s products, like several stools and armchairs in solid cedarwood, are produced with technologically highly advanced machinery, which allow to work and carve wood with extreme precision.
They are used to produce special products as well. Among the latest creations, we produced the Air Towers, design by Michele De Lucchi, exhibited under the arcades of Basilica Palladiana in Vicenza.
Order = quality of life…and work
furniture cover sheets Order = quality of life…and work: at the end of every day each finished piece of furniture and semi-finished product is covered with a red cotton sheet: small steps that help achieve products of high quality. These sheets serve to protect products from dust and the ultraviolet rays of the sun.
In Riva 1920 each trunk is carefully cut through technologically highly advanced machinery, guaranteeing the best accuracy and quality.
All the products belonging to our collections are entirely made of solid wood, basic material of Riva 1920’s production.
Firstly we start from the cutting of the trunk made through highly precise machinery, then solid wood pieces are put together with natural vinyl-based glues without any formaldehyde and any dangerous chemical residues. Riva furniture is then manually polished with natural waxes and oiled using special cotton cloths.
Respecting the low environmental impact, the production waste is not thrown away, but recycled and reused so as to preserve nature.
bordered with solid wood and veneered multiplex
Every panel of multiplex is edged with a 10 millimeter solid wood strip and covered with a wood veneer applied with vinyl-based glues.
RIVA 1920’s furniture is realized and assembled by our carpenters on a one-by-one basis under the supervision of the Quality Control expert.
Every product assembly bench is made up of an independent work
station each with its own carpenter.
In a dedicated department every individual element is given its finish, with its edges smoothed with the help of hand-held tools.
Every part of the product is oiled and waxed completely by hand. The oil is applied uniformly using special cotton cloths.
Before packing and dispatching, every piece of furniture is again put together so that the handles and other ironmongery can be attached, so as to allow the Quality Control procedure to be carried out as laid down in our Company Certification UNI EN ISO 9001 achieved by Riva 1920 in 1996.
Our tables are given a three-part check: first at the stage of the cutting and selection of material, then during the assembly and finishing stage and finally when the ironmongery is attached and the product is packed.
At the entrance to the production departments stands a “sledgehammer” with the instruction: “Red sledgehammer to be used to destroy products of low quality”.
This symbol spurs us on to do our best at work every day.
certificate of origin and quality
Every product comes with a “Certificate of Origin” signed by the Quality Control Manager.
The label shows not only the origin – “made in Italy” – of the product, but a progressive number, the “job number” which enables us to trace the entire production cycle of that particular article and to discover every its entire history.
Every piece of furniture comes with a kit containing maintenance instructions for the vegetable-oil based finish. The kit contains a bottle with the finish, a wire-wool pad for removing
any spots or scratches, a cotton cloth for applying the finish and cotton (or rubber) gloves.
packing and despatch
Every product is packed by hand by our storeroom staff, with particular care to the creation of “one-off” packaging for all the products that have been “made to measure”.
The aim is to reduce to a minimum any damages to the furniture during transportation.

veneered MULTIPLEX. A small scented cypress-wood insert is attached to the inside of the back wall to serve as a natural anti-moth device.
The various products and materials in our homes and workplaces contain many different volatile chemical and organic compounds.
These may give off plastic materials and solvents for months and even years. This is why we only use vinyl-based glues with the lowest levels of chemical residue and toxicity.
